In continuation with the culture theme that I decided to do this week, I wanted to discuss natural, or alternative medicines. As a child growing up in Jamaica this method of healing was used quite often as hospitals were few and far between and also money was not in agreement with most people so it stayed away. Poor people had to find their remedies out in nature and apply wisdom to use whatever they thought could cure whatever ailment…and often times it worked. This is also done in Africa today, where herbal medicine is highly preferred over modern science.Did not include all as I want others to share their knowledge. Recently, I was having a problem and contacted Obara Meji who told me what to do (I had a spot on my arm that itched like the dickens and even though it looked like ‘ringworm’ it was clear to me that it was an allergic reaction (people I am a clean person, if I am cooking and I feel the urge to pee, I rather wait until I am finished cooking before doing so. If however, the urge becomes unbearable, I finish my task with gloves – memba ah me an mi pikni alone mi cook fa, well most of the times anyway). She advised me to use lime and blue which helped tremendously. However, there was something at the back of my head which was just ribbing at me to ‘draw’ some bizzy and drink which I did. That completed the task.
Kaka Rawtid led me to do some research on herbs and home remedies, and fortunately I am in possession of a book entitled ‘The Herb Society of America, New Encyclopedia of Herbs and their Uses’ along with the limited knowledge I have of the use of certain herbs/bushes which I was exposed to as a child…………..( check the archives to read Kaka Rawtid)
Let me share a few with you: (these are all according to the above mentioned book)
Onion used for food flavoring and has an anti-infective compound. It reduces blood pressure, clotting and blood sugar levels
Garlic Is a potent antibiotic. On one website it is recommended that women use this as a douche in collaboration with vinegar to treat BV
Dill Improves digestion and relieves indigestion
Frankincense A relaxant, antiseptic and decongestant
Pomegranate Is used to expel tapeworms (ewww)
Ginger Relieves motion sickness and nausea
Aloe Vera (popularly known in Jamaica as ‘Sinkle Bible’. This is very useful in treating sunburn and aides those with sensitive skin
Thyme Did you know that this flavorful herb is also an antiseptic?
Pineapple The juice is used for menstrual problems and also helps with constipation.
These are but a few herbs that have medicinal properties and I am sure that fellow embracers have a few of their own. Remember ‘each one teaches one’. Do share…..Ase!!!
oonu know Obara Meji haffi add fi har two cents……..Maniac wrote about how important it is to handle food as clean as possible, and I am the same way. When it is time for me to cook for my family I bathe first, and no bathroom action until I am done. Horray for saying that Mainic because that is the correct thing to do. Let me expand a little on the home remedy side of natural healing……..according to old-time people the use of charcoal placed on your plate while you are eating prevents duppy/ghost from eating with you, making it impossible for them to harm you. For diarrhea, flour is parched into a hot pot until golden, then turned into paste by adding a little water and given to the patient to drink, charcoal can also be given to treat the same thing especially if vomiting is involved, If you are sleeping and wake up roach with in your ear (which can happen), your first warm morning urine is poured on to the ear to chase the roaches out….. GROSS….but.I have seen this done when I was a child and it works, also glycerine can be used also. Molasses and milk can be used to cure ulcer, my father did this and it worked after two operations with no relief, and for those mother who fear that they boy children may not become fully endowed Jamaicans always “beat yuh buddy pon papa tree”, in other words the tree of the Papaya can be of assistance, once it is properly appeased. Sour Sop leaves for nerves, also the breadfruit leaves, the dreaded Mojo herb for a good cleansing, (my mother gave that to us once a month in Jamaica, on Sunday), Aloe Vera is used to cleanse the blood and stave off diabetes, The balls of a slaughtered goat are roasted and given to men only to eat, enabling them to be “long distance stulla”…filled with great sexual strength and drive.
Banana skin is scraped and kerosene oil is applied to the skin and tied on to someones foot to entice whatever splinter or thorn that may be embedded there Garlic to lower blood pressure, rice bitters to help diabetes, ginger for cold, lime and honey for sore throat….
