THE BEAUTY OF SPIRITS + ANNOUNCEMENT

I have encounterd many spirits so far in my lifetime. I have seen them, felt them, communicated with them, danced with them (Zion revival/ Traditional initiations), fight with them, and even heard them speak. Jamaica full ah duppy more dan Africa. Let me rectify that statement. Here in Yorubaland it is never good for people to see the spirit of the dead, neither physically nor within your dreams; the dead has no business with the living they would say. For if you do see them, it means that that spirit has not gone off to their next life or that someone (an enemy) intends for you too to make your transition.

So when they bury people here, there are rites and rituals done to ensure that the spirit is sent off safely and does not walk the earth in non-physical form. You will hardly find an African priest/spiritualist that will send “duppy” offa smaddy. It is never good to unearth spirits that has been buried and have gone off to their next life. Yes, one can go onto their gravesite to make offerings and pray or sit. This is symbolic because of course the spirit of the person never lingers in that hole, but there is forever a connection there, so going there is indeed symbolic and the message will be heard and the offering received a (if done correctly).

However, Africans (more specifically Yorubas) do not spend time on the dead (as in reporting seeing them much or sending them on errand like how Jamaican Obeah people love do). They rather respect them, in the way that they once lived and have gone on to continue to bless and support the family left behind. This is not to say some people do not use them, but there is much more power here in Africa greater than that which is utilized. But the dead are indeed celebrated, such as Egungun or Masquerade (ancestral spirits).

When I was a small girl I could feel them, as I grew I began to see them and more. They were always around me for some reason. Well let me rephrase that, they were everywhere. Just as how there are populations of people here in this realm, there are the same who walk among us as non-physicals, as earthbound or wayward spirits. My country Jamaica is filled with them. The thing is they know that you know they are around. There is a special light within you (the person who can see or feel them) that they alone can see. Even you do not know that you carry this light. Something people need to know is that whenever you see a spirit, often times it is THE SPIRIT that allowed you to see them. Here in Nigeria, when a particular spirit wants to pass through, they will come as a sudden gush of wind and someone knowledgeable will know to send everyone inside their homes because this spirit does not want to be seen. Not all spirits possess the power of hiding themselves.

But seeing them often (in dreams especially), if this spirit was a family member or if they were friend or neighbour or any kind of associate – it is never good. This means that they are earthbound and have not gone on to where they belong.

We spend most times thinking or speaking about the malevolent side of spirit energies. Perhaps this is because most human beings are no good and love to use Obeah negatively to affect many lives and this involves the use of spirits.

I have had spirits come to me and complain that they were tired, one such spirit was Bob Marley. I wrote about this story here before. It is good to remember the dead, but it is not good to call upon them incessantly or use them. They have transitioned but will be unable to settle because they are constantly being pulled back to Earth. When I saw Bob Marley I was an adult with children. I saw him at a time when I felt despondent and alone. I wrote in my last post that during those times with the wicked baby father I cried more than I laughed.

We had argued terribly the night before and I had cried myself to sleep. I woke up still in tears and sad. It took a few minutes after waking up for me to remember that I saw Bob Marley, and while I will not recount the whole dream (I have written it here too many times) the message was clear and comforting from this wonderful spirit. “No woman, nuh cry.” That was the message he brought to me. I had never forgotten it, and there are times when that down feeling wants to creep back into my life and the memory of him comes to me. It is funny that I feel so comforted by those the eyes can never see, but most certainly are around, what a beautiful life God has given me.

While I was going through my spiritual awakening which lasted for some time, there was a song that I would hear play in my head all the time. My spiritual hearing was open and I could hear from spirits. The song sounded familiar but I could not catch all the words. It sounded like a church song, one we would sing in Zion revival. One day I hummed it fi mi Obeah man friend, and he began singing it right out. He told me the name of it and I went searching. Eureka! It was a message from my beautiful non-physical friends who took care of me and my children after my mother kicked me out. They were still taking care of me and mine, but they wanted me to hear this message through song. I will give you a few lines of the song, the chorus…

“We shall know, as we are known,
Never more to walk alone,
In the dawning of the morning
Of that bright and happy day,
We shall know each other better,
When the mists have rolled away…”

Here they were telling me that one day, when the time comes for my enemy to join them, it is then that I will meet them, know who they are.

That day while I looked at the computer screen, singing the song to myself softly, to the tune of how my friend did, tears welled. It was not tears of sadness, it was tears of the newfound wonder that regardless of what I had gone through and was still going through, I was loved. It didn’t matter to me that they were non-physical beings/spirits. Here were these beautiful teachers, guides, guardians and protectors, who found a way to convey a message to me. “We shall know each other better when the mist have rolled away”.

Please read this beautiful post I wrote some time ago. Some spirits are messengers and protectors. They have no form or shape, no life as we in physical form do, but there are those who are our friends and are looking out for us.

Years ago, my Padrino had told me to give an offering to the spirits who live at the corner of my street. He said there are spirits everywhere, and certainly on my street. He told me to do this so that the spirit will know that I acknowledge its presence and they will look out for me and mine as we pass daily. I have never forgotten his wisdom.

A family member of mine was staying at my house while I was in Africa last year. He told me that in the night he wanted to walk to the store which was some ways off from my house. It was around 3am. As he was walking up the street, he heard a voice say “turn back and go home”, the voice was so strong, he turned around looking for the person. No one. The voice came again two more times, each time getting stronger, the last one the strongest and most stern. He decided to turn back. The next day he heard that there was a robbery at the gas station where he headed at that hour.

How beautiful is spirit.

It’s not everyone with a quiet disposition that is kind-natured.,,,Yoruba Proverb!

[Appearances can be deceptive.]

Note to Everyone:

I will be in Jamaica very soon. If anyone needs to see me while I am there, start emailing me now so we could set up our meeting. Many of you have emailed me in the past asking me when am I coming, well the time has come. Jamaica here I come!

Second note: Jamaica is currently flooding all over the island. The rivers have joined together and come down. Jamaicans should know that this is nature at war or perhaps warning them. The morality of our society has dwindled down to almost nothing and there are many things that are happening upon the land, our spiritual land (Jamaica is not a normal place) that the guardians and protectors are angry with. When nature comes up on a person, people, land, country, like this – it means God is not pleased with something. There is so many things I would love to explain but I can not, but I will say this, our morals in our country needs to be built to back up. A long time ago Jamaica was a very spiritual place, but it is no longer. Jamaican government needs to know that the land needs to be brought back to what it is supposed to be and this can only be done through spirituality.

Good morning mums. So many of us are uneducated as it come to spirit. I just want to thank you for correcting the miseducation, as we grew in fear and disgust of “duppy” rather than understanding and appreciating them, the good as well as bad. I include the bad because you say the problems in life are our biggest teachers, so the wicked duppy are in fact teachers. I now realize that my longing for my family members to visit me was just my human emotions that missed their presence. When they had in fact already said their goodbyes to… Read more »

Morning Obara and all ES Even though I have only seen one dead family member thankfully they haven’t revisited. I sometimes lite my white tea lights and pray everyone has transitioned peacefully. I feel extras at times with me. I have even abruptly turned around and felt a small bump. Like someone was bumping into me. It is amazing when you start to be present in your life and pay attention to things Teacher has taught, you see and feel things more. I haven’t left food on my block in awhile…think I will very soon. Obara what day should I… Read more »

Lawd I fear Jamaica can’t go back to the spirituality it once had- Jamaica too westernized, just watch TV, music, our culture its all gone the American way- so sad very….
the younger generation have no idea what true Jamaica is- I dont want to get political but we started to stray in the 80s by politicians who Americanized Jamaica well being-
oh well I will continue to pray for my country because no where no better than YARD

Another amazing post, and i’m happy you’re going back to your home. The Caribbean is an amazing place and more spiritually powerful than some might realize. I have a question about spirits though, how can we confirm a particular spirit says who they say they are? Had a strange dream where i was approaching my aunt’s house , and my cousin who was wearing white as was I, said she could not allow me in with Ogun behind me. I thought it was a strange dream, but now i notice black dogs alot and before that it was mermaid dreams… Read more »

Zulupickney, I thought about the spiritual implications too. Jamaica has gone to the days. As a nation the glorification of scamming, men dressing as women (extra tight skinny jeans as well), murdering, young girls doing any and everything to hype on instagram. Naturally our ancestors must be turning in their graves.

Obara, “there is much more power here in Africa greater than that which is utilized” I am well learned on the use of spirits of the dead ( cause mi gaah obeah class lol) but to avoid assumptions… Two Questions 1. What is the source of the power used in the Motherland? 2. What prevents the natives from utilizing the full extent of the power they have access to? 3. Can you differentiate between earthbound and wayward spirits? Is it that earthbound are stuck here and wayward jus bad breed an jus nuh waa leave? I know I gone over… Read more »

WOW!!! When I became pregnant with my first daughter, I was dating, I was a good girl. My mother knew this. My mother believed that my child was as a result of an incestuous relationship. She did not know of me having a boyfriend, so I must have become pregnant by a relative. That has scared me for life. I have never hugged my brothers or dad after that. I had stretch marks on my tummy and that somehow made me afraid/ashamed to get in the nude with anyone. Now I can see connections. I knew my male relatives love… Read more »

Blessings Teach. I remember when I read the blog about Bob Marley visiting you and we laughed and joked so much about it. I remembered you said he came in and you washed his locks. We had such fun that day laughing about it. I remember also that my big daughter who never gave me problems, one day was rude to me. I was hurt by her comments. Out of the blue, I dreamt about my sister-in-law (ex) who had died. She was disabled and had passed on for 18 years. She came to me and said, thank you. I… Read more »

Thank you as always for the spiritual knowledge. Many of us long to hear from our loved ones who passed on but you made me realize that it’s not good to hear from them too often.
