The Obeah Man and His Wife, the Mermaid

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series The Obeah Man and the Mermaid

I do not know anyone who is not curious or even fascinated about Mermaids. The question for everyone is “Are they real?“. People in the Caribbean will tell you yes, they are. People in Africa will also say the same, and again perhaps throughout the entire world people have had encounters with them and there are fascinating mythological stories about them. I have my own idea and explanation of them and what I think, or should I say know, from information I have received from the higher worlds of them.

There were the fascinating stories coming out of Zimbabwe about the mermaids who appeared when the Chinese were commissioned to build a dam, forcing the government to enlist the help of traditional elders.

Or perhaps in Africa the many stories of these “water women” whose allure was unlike any other, with men finding themselves falling madly in love at first sight. One young man in particular told me a tale of a man who had followed his mysterious woman to “meet her family”. Who was to know this “family” lived at the bottom of the ocean?

And then there is the well known story of the German engineer Julius Berger who refused to heed to the warning that he could not build the bridge he wanted to build in Nigeria because the mermaids had to be appeased first. He, of course, did not believe in these superstitions and built the bridge without the water’s appeasement. He later died a mysterious death to which many rumors have been made.

And then there is the famous flat bridge in Jamaica where, at times, the river known as the Rio Cobre would take motorists in and it is said that this is being done by the Mermaids there.

These examples makes these beings seem evil, but that is not the case.

But allow me to share my own knowledge on these Beings, or at least some of it, as I cannot reveal everything here on internet land.

I have had my own personal encounters with these beings, the Mermaids, but here I will only mention one. With me, most of my supernatural encounters are with my psychic body, not my physical self.

One day, I was invited to Jamaica to attend the re-opening of a famous Zion Revival obeah man’s church. At the time I was very active in Zion (spiritual church) so I was invited.

But on the first night that I slept on his compound, I found myself transported into a very clinical sanitized looking room, with me sitting on what looked like a metal gurney.

The room was sparse and across from me were two women who looked like the indigenous people of Jamaica which were the Tainos or Arawak Indians as we called them.

They had no top cloth on and on their bottom half they wore very long skirts which touched the ground so their feet were not shown. Their hair was long, black and wavy and it covered their breasts so they were not exposed.

They were Mermaids or representations of them. This was something I knew as well as knowing that I was at the bottom of the river even though I saw or felt no water. Even though I can only recall seeing these two, there were more beings that were also present, but either I was not allowed to see them or I was not allowed to remember what they looked like.

Something there spoke to me telepathically and told me that if I wanted to see and learn more, they had to do something to my enemy’s eyes which would make them become like fish eyes for the time I was there. They told me that what I was about to see could not be taken back to my world.

They revealed to me many things and to this day, I have never divulged any of what I had learned.

Note that while I was there, I did not see or feel water, yet I was at the bottom of the river in this almost darkened room.

When I woke up from that very real and true experience, I went to find the obeah man.

For the story’s sake, let’s call this man Bishop Abraham. When I woke up and refreshed myself I immediately sought Bishop Abraham out. We went inside of his office and I began to tell him,

“Your yard is dry,” I told him. “It needs to be saturated well with water.”

I did not know where this was coming from, but something drove me to speak. I even began to reprimand him.

“The River Mother is not happy with you. Don’t you feel the heat in the yard? How hot it is no matter how the breeze blows? You know that you are supposed to be wetting your yard morning, noon, and night according to your commitment. Fish does not flourish well on dry land.”

(Didn’t know that the word fish there had a double entendre).

Apparently this was apart of a “commitment” he had made with a particular spirit. I was telling him so, though I, myself, had no idea of this, nor had he ever told a soul.

Bishop Abraham rushed to the door, violently upset, shouting plenty of Jamaican bad words, a whole string of claats (I was shocked for a Bishop).

Here’s the edited version of what he said. “Pearl, Joyce! You see this woman has come all the way from foreign to pick up the message that this yard must be wet, you piece of (****). Why am I giving you money every month? For what!”

I was mostly amused by his dentures which click-clocked as he spoke, indicating he definitely did not have on any poly grip that day.

He told them that they knew the protocols of his yard and were not doing it.

Still… many things were happening in his yard. For while it may have looked like a normal yard plus a church– we were all actually underwater. It was all an illusion. But no one, not even him, knew of this.

The workers scurried about getting the hose and drums of water to saturate the very large yard.

The man then sat me down and began to tell me a tale, one that he said he has never recounted to anyone…

He said when he was 19 years old, he had an encounter through his psychic body, as I did with the story I just told. In other words, he went to sleep and his spirit left his body with him still in attendance (meaning the experience was real and vivid). In the vision, he was walking on a small bridge by the ocean and a large black fish came out of the water and kissed him full on the lips.

He said he was astonished because the kiss was wet and real. He told me that they were now locked into their own space. No longer was there any water, or sky, or anything. Time had stood still, and they were no longer apart of it.

The fish now turned into a woman, a Mermaid, according to his words, although he did not see the tail. She married him by placing a gold ring on his ring finger and told him that henceforth he belonged to her. She told him that his life began that day and she would teach him all he needed to know.

Upon waking up, he went through a series of hardship and depression where he developed the gift of healing and divination and his knowledge of spiritual things developed. He became one of the strongest obeah men of time. He told me that she visited him often and took him on many trips.

For a while he could be intimate with no one, and had to sleep on the floor. His mermaid-wife had isolated him from society, and she had told him that she was his real wife, no matter who he married in the physical world. And whatever wife he would get in the physical world, it would be she who would select her. Each time his psychic body would visit her, he would always be wearing that gold ring, the symbol of their union.

She directed every area of his life and even told him who to marry. She brought a wife to him and together, they had seven children. The man became extremely powerful and famous, he traveled the world working for people and was very wealthy because of it. People paid top dollar for his incredible abilities, though he worked his power through Christianity and was a Bishop in a church, but his “wife”, the “Mermaid” was the source of his gift.

When he would move in church, he would fall on the ground and move his body like a fish. He would rise with prophecies unlike any other, and miraculous healings, and this was how his name had spread far and wide. Although after he would heal, he, himself, would become very ill. Eventually, he mastered this.

At the time he was telling me the story, his wife, the human one, had left him, and the Mermaid-wife had withdrawn her support… but there was a reason, can you guess?

What I can tell you is that he had broken their covenant in many ways more than just forgetting to keep a wet yard. The rest, I will leave to you to figure out.

The human wife had walked out and left him and all the children, house and lands. The only thing she had taken with her was the van.

Unbeknownst to me, the reason he had invited me was to come and help him try to get his wife back.

He had closed his Church for sometime now and ever since that, his life had been falling apart, but there was more. There was a great change to his own lifestyle and it was because of this that the power he had supporting him, his wife, had withdrawn her support and had withdrew everything she had given to him, fame, money, and power.

He died soon thereafter from pneumonia and this was very telling of the force who took him off the earth. Can you figure out what I mean by this? Place the answer in the comment.

Mermaids are real, but what exactly are they? Half human, half fish is how they are described however our perception of things are based on the general idea of what they are perceived to be or described to be. But humans will see and imagine what the mind can only conceive or hold.

In our world, forces of nature abide and humankind are affected by them whether through physical means or metaphysical means.

In the Obeah man’s case, he had work to do on earth and he belonged to the element of water. A watery being came to him in his vision and gave him power, she initiated him, and that was what the marriage was, but she appeared to him or his psychic body as something his own spirit would remember. The fish was also black as representation of the power she was to impart to him, and the gold ring was his initiation to the watery realm and symbol of his commitment.

You see, my people, the obeah man and the mermaid had met before coming from the world they both belonged to.

Can I tell you that these beings live among us in the human world? Even some among our own families. They look and appear just like any other human being, nearly undetectable. However, there are particular attributes to them that only a few earthlings can recognize.

The world we live in is as real as Casper the friendly ghost, but we must encounter things that will shape our reality for us to finally wake up to forces that are meant to drive us to Source. These encounters can come in many shapes and forms.

The Mermaid is real, but only as the conception we have of her in our own minds. But that which is spirit is always and can fit any shape or form. In the case of the Obeah Man, Bishop Abraham, as with many other people whose gifts are derived from some particular source (and they are not ungodly, I remind you), if you do find the path, walk it correctly and never forget your purpose and how you got to the road you walk today.

Do not forget that despite the gifts and realizations and knowledge… there are tests every step of the way, for every “Master” is but a student, and it is only when he forgets this, that he becomes wayward.

Greetings Obara and my water family. Knowing my connection to the water, I have struggl for years, especially since I had experience with churches trying to cast out mermaid/marine spirit out of me…its caused me a great deal of torment trying to figure out if who/what I am is a bad or good thing but my dreams and experiences continued. I would see myself in the water with turquoise tail, or the fact that in earth life I cannot swim but in my dream I would jump in the water and swim away. My grand uncle used to clean the… Read more »

Ma’am Obara this post is quite intriguing. I am wondering why the bishop didn’t consult with his mermaid wife when he had issues with his earthly wife to know how to resolve it. But I would say staying true to one’s path really requires grace and strong dedication. Fame and wealth can really make one derail if care is not taken. I ask for grace and strength from the divine and my spiritual guides to continue on my path correctly, Asee

It is no mere coincidence that I stumbled upon this story. I have long wondered why my life is almost always plagued with hardship even though I sometimes sense that I am divinely protected and guided. Sometimes I have dreams that come to pass in the real world. Sometimes I know things I can’t explain how I came to know them. I am a Christian and so after experiencing the last financial loss I had a few weeks ago, I went to see a prophet who told me that I have water friends and a spiritual husband, I have refused… Read more »

Ma’am Obara, I have a question I’ve always wanted to ask intuitively. How does one know they are a child of the water? I have read one of your past post about the characteristics of water children including their beauty (long necks etc) and also through Chinese astrology, that they are usually pulled to live close to water sources like rivers and lakes. I also think that water children are more susceptible to eczema – the nature of which requires one to stay hydrated and manage it with moisture. I’m only speaking out of what my limited knowledge thinks I… Read more »

Yes, I would really love to join the meeting. How does one sign up please? Lol, it is something I have been sitting with for a long time and when I thought back to this post, I realised that Osun might be a lesson here as well because isn’t she the goddess of the water and also, she brings wealth to the man she is married to. She is not to be messed with though. Water is raging when provoked.

Bishop Abraham was moving like a funny fish himself. Not in a good way. He was dishonest, disrespectful, disloyal & also greedy too. He diss his mermaid wife in so much ways. He use to visit her & then stop because he became to busy with his new lifestyle. She tie him to her. He belong to her, but he seem to lost himself to this new life that was given to him. He left his mermaid wife high and dry when he was suppose to paid his dues to her every month. He also did not have time for… Read more »

Hello again Obara! Something else in the passage keeps gnawing at me. 1) You wrote that the yard was quite hot despite the breeze blowing it couldn’t cool it down. Outside of the fact that he was to continuously keep the yard wet, could it be the heat came because he was possibly entertaining other forces? 2) You also mentioned that so “many” things were happening in his yard and there was the “illusion” of being underwater. Could you please explain this point in detail when you give your two cents? 3) In my original comment I said that homosexuality… Read more »

Hm. This sounds a bit too fear-based imo. I think it best we apply a more rational, independent thinking to these entities rather than repeating our religious point of views. I haven’t seen any indication of malevolence from the story. It seems he used his gifts to help people, and that his own change of character withdrew his access to those gifts.

If you agree that mermaids are demons, from that mindset, what do you think of the Orishas? I’m curious too. Remember we’re dealing with spirits not human beings..and the Obeah man closing his church seemed to be a covenant he broke causing his downfall and death. If a human being breaks the law on Earth, we would except consequences such as jail time or a fine.

They are not necessarily demons. I know a person who said how they helped him with out a pact . He said how beautiful they are, and even these miss universe in human body are ugly compared to them. But you need to control yourself and your envy so that you do not find yourself following them which means leaving the human body for good! Let’s not judge so that we can open a window to many unknown mysteries

Hi Obara and everyone, attempting to answer your questions. ” if you do find the path, walk it correctly and never forget your purpose and how you got to the road you walk today.” – that sums up the divorce. He no longer saw the importance of honoring & respecting the “source.” The mere fact his church was no longer in service showed his loss of privilege. Plus the compound became cursed hence the “illusion.” His fame/popularity turned into oblivion where nobody sort after him and was left with nothing. This is the role which the human wife & real… Read more »

Hello Obara and Readers! Could it be that Pastor Abraham engaged in a lifestyle of Homosexuality? And because it’s considered Taboo hence why the Mermaid withdrew herself and everything else?

It comes with the impact you were destined to make here, greatness is accompanied by suffering. Although I don’t know why it is so. The spirit wife withdrew his power because his wife left. His wife left because of his changed lifestyle which might have included adultery and consumption of alcohol. The spirit wife chose that particular earthly wife for him because she could carry the force of the spirit wife. Anyways water spirit has always been the one behind prophecies and healing. A lot of Nigerian pastors / prophets have Obatala and Olokun energy (it’s in their lineage too) and they are allowed to use Christianity(even in water initiation, if you are destined to be a prophet, you will be told) Here is… Read more »

I also think the Bishop had an affair and he probably was considering abandoning his spirit given wife for the new woman and it went the other way for him.The wife left and he realised he actually needed her more than he knew .Pneumonia was flooding of his lungs with water from the spirits as he had gone outside of the agreed terms of surviving with the gift .

Thank you Obara for another wonderful and enlightening post. I have heard about mermaids in stories and they always come off as very beautiful and enchanting 🙂 Definitely a lot to draw and learn from your post today. My attempt at deciphering this is as follows: the seven (children) were representative of the deadly sins/virtues as we know them. With such power and fame and riches, one is susceptible to fall into vices. Obeah man broke all the covenants to maintain humility and virtue in the wake of all he accomplished. Pneumonia comes with a build up of fluid in… Read more »

Greetings to you Obara Meji. I really enjoyed this post and the comments. I’ll also make an attempt at your question. Since you said the mermaid withdrew her powers for reasons more than just keeping the yard wet. I think the Mermaid withdrew her powers because; (1) She told him she was his real wife no matter who he married in the physical world. He forgot her when he married the physical wife. (2) The mermaid gave him another chance by leading you to him. The mistake he made was that, instead of wanting you to help him find his… Read more »

He said people need to be careful when they drive there and slow down when it come to this bridge. But now it all make sense with this video that you put here for us to watch. With what the lady is talking about in the video. The video clip… Read more »

Thank you Obama. Well written. Pneumonia- his lungs filled with fluid (water) and he suffocated. Like a fish out of water… He flourished for a while but due to him not being true to himself or appeasing his spiritual wife he no longer flourished. It seems he had become fishy (entendre) and that was a sin against spirit and earthly wives. He made a different commitment with a particular funny style spirit. Ooo smh. Broke his covenant and more! He never saw her tail just like you never saw their feet or tails in your vision. You both knew you… Read more »

This is a very good write up and it makes me always wonder is the heaven in the ocean. Since the beginning of time, water has been the force and even the creator did not create water and water is in the whole earth. May the force of water keep guiding us to fulfill destiny.

Sorry. It just came to me about the gurney again. He could have taken something when he baptize you. Or bury in the water. Destiny swap.

Greetings, respect. I would like to have a go please. Yes, mermaids and mermen as they have been coined are real. It appears you were to come full circle. The Obeah man was dishonest and stole another’s gift. However, the kiss and ring were a set and seal to incorporate the power the lady of the river was to bestow. If he could handle the power, which truly was not his. You, through the spirit was summoned back to give revelation of his sin against you and the water. Incidentally, it is a female divine force although masculine in some… Read more »

He was supposed to do the land wetting himself but he got people to do it for him and didn’t pay much attention to it anymore.

I guess doing the land wetting himself shows his commitment to the river mother in return more than the ring but is this the destiny he signed for himself before coming to this world?

So does the spirit wife manifest in the human wife while he has an intimate session with her is probably why she chose the human wife for him so that is a human manifestation of the spirit wife?

Ok I want to take another try to see if I can get closer to the answer. Is it because the pastor called you to bring back his wife knowing that he already made a vow to the water spirit. Which he probably already knew that his wife and children would leave eventually. You didn’t know anything until you went to the house and when you started to reveal certain things to him. He had no choice but to give you the full story of him and his mermaid wife.

The water spirits need to be appeased. I think he neglected giving to the water spirits.

Obara. I love everything that you write. Thank you for this post on mermaids and showing and also teaching us that mermaids are real. So much to comment on and have questions about. But, first of all Thank you again for this enlightenment on this topic..

You are so right my SeaStar. These beings are very real because if it nuh go so it go very near so. In addition, the stories of mermaids can be found in every single country and indigenous culture. As a matter of fact, I found out just yesterday that there is an astrological alignment happening right now with the Lilith Moon, Sedna and Pluto. The Sedna constellation is named after an Inuit girl whose father tossed her overboard his vessel as it was caught up in wild weather. Him literally chop off har finga dem as she try to climb… Read more »

Water I think of Olukun! Pneumonia I have to think that whatever happened to him was NOT natural but spiritual and connected to some kind of displeasure from the water goddess. Since not knowing the 100 of the story I am extrapolating here….. If his powers was from Olukun that would so connect to the appeasement of water in the yard.

Thank you for this post. I know of an Obeah man in Jamaica initiated to the ‘Queen of the Coast of Jamaica’ and the son of the Goddess of ‘Rio Cobre’, inwhich he told me is the ‘river of reincarnation.’ I had no idea, spiritualists initiate to marine spirits in Jamaica, I always thought Agwé, Yemonja and Oshun were the only marine spirits to initiate to although you mentioned Oshun said “she is not a mermaid.” -The pneumonia is a reflection of the ‘dry conditions of the yard’…the same way the marine spirits suffered with dryness became his ultimate fate.… Read more »

Hi Obara and classmates! He died from the force of water. I want to say that he drowned. His wife in the water realm took all of his abundance left him dry on land, and his way of physical death was drowning. The pastor didn’t hold up his end of the deal.

Quite and enlightening post ma’am. He died of pneumonia. The wife hit him with symptoms a fish would suffer out of water, but the only understandable symptoms to humans that would fit right, was the spiritual blow manifesting as pneumonia. He broke covenant and probably taboos he was given, and this was achieved by his change of lifestyle. It feels like the energy he worked with had him exhausted in spirit. This was a good read. Thank you!! PS: Dear ES Family, Do you guys know there is a testimonial section on the site. I encourage you to click on… Read more »

Not because of ego for sure ma’am. But feedback is great to receive. It inspires you to keep at what you do, as you read the results from people you assist. It’s even bigger than monetary gifts. I do go there to read testimonials, and i see that not a lot of people write over there, hence i mentioned it to bring the attention of others here.

It’s a pleasure and honor to contribute as we keep learning from you and the universe.

Big up Godmother. Regards!!!

He dying from pneumonia; symbolic because a fish can’t live on dry land.

She discarded him and put him back on dry land.
