Your Higher Self and its Role in Your Life

There are so many things I wish I could discuss and share openly here on this platform, but I always think twice before sharing.

Impulsive as I am, and at times wanting to throw caution to the wind and just write, I stop and I think, am I oversharing?

Sadly I feel stuck in the way I currently write, wanting to have some conversations with you all, but not sure if some topics will fly over your heads. Some are here for the stories on obeah and I must admit, it is a curious and entertaining topic, however spirituality is in every area of our lives and we must explore all.

So of course most of you are just peepers and do not interact so what’s the use of rambling off on deeper topics? What do I do? How do I allow this blog to evolve you all, without you all evolving with it? Sigh!

Well, today I want to write about our higher self.

Yes, we are more than who we think we are. More than what we seem, more intelligent than we know. Yes, we have a higher, more evolved, super intelligent us. This regal majestic us is a hero, a master, a god if you will.

A super intelligent being that is everywhere and no where at once, are you able to understand this?

Of course some of us have higher selves that are more “heroic” than others, or should I say works overtime and are always on top of things, and very active. Some are just a little less active for its human, but then that may be the humans fault, I can explain this but to do so would make this post lengthy.

The Yoruba people of South Western Nigeria calls the higher self Ori, or Ori Eleda, “your Creator”, and it is honored as its own divinity. Some people describe Ori as your inner consciousness, but the Yoruba title for the Ori, “your creator”, you will see later on why this name is fitting.

Most often people around the world may refer to it as “my inner being” or “my spirit” or even “my mind”. My mother would often say in our Jamaican patois “Mi mind tell mi sey….” and often times she was always correct. Her “mind” has always guided her right. It was the one who spilled the beans to her that her teenage daughter (me) was pregnant, what can I say? It was hers and it was loyal to her.

Some of you can testify to saying “My mind told me to go back home, and this was how I caught my husband with the baby sitter”. I am sure this resonates.

However the traditional Yorubas make a habit of serving their inner consciousness, their Ori. They know that the higher self keeps watch over its charge (us) day and night. It runs back and forth ceaselessly for our greater good, so they see it prudent to “feed” it (meaning to offer sacrifices) in order to energize it so that it keeps active and function well in our lives. If one does not know of this practice, then the “head” (direct translation of “Ori”) is “served” in ways that you may be unaware of. For example, you might feel the sudden desire to try rabbit for the first time. Or maybe you are feeling for a change, and so you shave all your hair off. Or maybe you feel adventurous and dunk your head into a bucket of ice cold water, etc. These are many ways the higher consciousness may lead you to serving it. However, only some follow these inner instincts, and others do not.

As a matter of fact no divination in the Ifa tradition, or initiation is done without, first, the consultation and honoring of your higher self.

Respectfully, it is the one who guides you and will be the one to present itself at Judgement when you transition to a higher world (when you leave this life) and speak on your behalf and the role it played as guide while you walked the earth. For while you will be on trial, so will it. You will see it for the first time and you will be shocked what it looks like.

Persons who are succeeding in life, will owe all of that success to their Higher Self. It has guided them well.

One will now ask, because money is on the minds of most people, “Does this mean my head is not woking for me? Because I am poor.”

While this can be a valid question, we as humans ought to know that we are emotional creatures to the detriment of our understanding and progress. I say this because in some cases, your head can be so powerful that it may see early death or bad sickness for you and exchange the wealth you desire to preserve your long life or good health. Sacrifice is a law of life.

It is not for us to know what is before us, however our Ori sees and knows all and directs us toward the path that best befits us.

We are layers in spirit but have no idea of our strength, power and might. There is the physical body but our ethereal body is like a rose that has layers of petals, each serving us in the material world as well as in the spiritual world.

The layer that is on the outer part of the rose has no idea that the other layers within it exists, yet the rose is whole, layered as many but is whole, such is the human and its spirit.

Our higher self lives within us, attached to us through spirit, but it does not linger within the body as our organs do. It is attached to us but it is in spirit form so it has the ability to go and come as it pleases while still knowing what is going on in our lives simultaneously.

For some humans, their higher self is super active and gets the human to achieve what it is here to do. For others, the higher self is active, but often times the human can be stubborn and the higher self does not succeed in getting its human charge to accomplish it earthly mission, hence some are more heroic than others.

The higher self is spirit, and it knows its duty to its assignee, so it will do its best, even though to spirit the earth plane is like a very heavy and filthy swamp, meaning the energy it emits.

However it travels everywhere and is like a soldier or body guard whose sole purpose is to guide and protect us, regardless the environment.

If you book a flight to travel somewhere, you higher self arrives to that place before you do. It has the ability to be in many places at once.

Most often we may feel our left or right eye jumping, our knees or our left or right hand itching. All these have spiritual meanings, but guess who is giving you those warnings or alerts? Yup, your higher self. As this is the material world, like a reflection in water, spiritual communications becomes distorted. Therefore, a warning or other alert may reflect to us as a itching palm or twitching eye. It is for the prudent to discern its meaning.

At nights when you enter the dream world, or when you take a nap in the day and have a vision, who do you think guides you or watches over your body while you sleep? You guessed it, your extremely ruthless, magnificent higher self.

If you are in Timbuktu and I talk about you and you have no way of knowing that you are the topic thousands of miles away, guess who knows what I said and how I said it? And if your higher self knows, guess who also stores this information? You. But what stands between you and that knowledge is lack of awareness. The glamor of the material world, with all of its distractions and illusions, trapping the spirit into a pitiful delusion, the voice of the higher self falls deaf on human ears.

It is not only what is happening that your higher self has contact with. It is a highly evolved being and so it has access to the heavens and realms from where you came from. It can connect you to all that is within and without, the Macro and the Micro.

I once had a divination done by a very competent Babalawo in Nigeria. He told me a very surprising story that brought slight tears to my eyes because somewhere in my mind, I had a distant memory.

The oracle said that I have a very good friend in heaven that was upset with me. He said this friend loves me very much but was disappointed that I had forgotten it. He went on to say that when I was leaving “heaven” (meaning the realm in which I lived within time and space) to come to earth, I promised her that I would not forget her.

For most of my life I used to buy two of everything whenever I liked any thing, be it dress, or shoes or books or anything, however at the time of the divination, I no longer did.

For years I had a habit of buying everything in twos (side note: it is said that the odu Obara Meji can be transliterated as “[The] King Bought Two”). I even used to wonder why I did this, but I just told myself that if I liked something, I would buy another as to preserve what I liked. We all have memories of a distant life, we just don’t know.

I had no idea that my higher self was feeding me the information, that I had told this friend who lived in the world I came from that when I was on earth I would make a habit of remembering her this way.

Whew!! I love spirit and spiritual things! My higher self is great and so is yours.

When I write I am often nostalgic. It took years of tears and woes for me to find me, and I cannot recall the very moment that I self realized, but it has been the most exhilarating thing that has ever happened to me.

I am still growing and at times it is painful, however, my higher self is with me and loves me to a point that I don’t understand. Oh, when I meet her on the day a hundred years from now, as lead defender for me before the mighty judges looking down at us. I will break code and decorum and give her a great big hug while smiling.
