The Spiritual Uses of Honey and How to Use It in Your Life

Greetings to all and everyone, to the initiates and to all seekers. To all traditional initiates of Ifa, I greet you brotherly, Aboru Aboye Abosise. To all Christians I greet you all in the matchless name of Jesus your soon coming King, and to my muslims Assalamu Alaikum. To my Caribbean friends, howdy do! And to mi hard core patois speaking, bustamante, icy mint and juicy patty eating Jamaicans here reading this Whaah gwan!

Together, we are students embracing our spirituality. I welcome you today.

The topic of honey is one that has been on my mind for years, but for some reason I keep forgetting to write a post on it. Perhaps I know of its power all too well and was slightly reluctant to write on it, because I know how giving and sharing I can be and more enemies read this blog than friends (¬_¬). Yes, the enemies are still seekers too.

My government name, the one that my father named me means honey. He had no idea of its meaning I am sure, but I believe he was directed by the universe to name me so. Honey is a treasure and should be seen as such. In our Yoruba traditional practice, honey can be found in the Holy Odu Ifa Ogunda/Otura (an Odu is akin to the akashic records where all humans on earth have their life or destiny book written there like a contract). In Ogunda/Otura there is an allegorical story that tells of the coming of Honey to Earth. Honey wanted to go to the earth to serve human beings, and as with everything that is willing to take on the journey to earth, honey sought divination from a Babalawo (an Ifa priest).

Honey (if it is to be genderized is a feminine energy) was advised by the Oracle to make sacrifice before coming to earth so that it will be social and everyone would love and accept her, and she did.

Because of that sacrifice, the Yorubas say, “No one tastes honey and frowns!” in honor of honey’s sweetness and qualities. Honey can never be spoken bad of, it has superior medicinal purposes and has the ability to cure all things of life spiritual and otherwise. Thus, in Ifa’s ancient wisdom, honey is often used in sacrifices to achieve the same purpose in the lives of individuals (such as the sacrifice mentioned in the Odu Ogbe Otura).

Here, I juxtapose honey with salt. Although to the tongue they are two different tastes, both are spiritually categorized as sweet!

Honey is benevolent. In other words, there is no work of malevolence that can be done with honey. While you and I see it in its material aspect, made by bees and something golden (or dark) in color, the physicality of it, the flavor of it, the smell of it– does not make the effect of it.

The effect of of honey comes from the energy that created it. In other words it takes a massive amount of bees to create this which includes the Queen who plays a majestic role within the colony. The energy used by all the bees is something that cannot be imagined by humans as they do not possess the ability to work all around non-stop in a chaotic environment that entails both suffering and death.

Some ancients called bees the “only creature that has come unchanged from Heaven”. I have often told you all that when things come from the spiritual world into our world, it does not come in its original form, even humans, but it will arrive with a slight difference or corruption. This is why those who attack others with juju, or people who pray or practice manifestation, don’t often see the result exactly as they intended to see it, but only some acceptable similarity or even something completely different.

Honey is considered most holy because of its relation to not only life, but new life, and “new life” as a result of death, out of which the spirit arises refined and purified. This is why honey bees are active only when the weather is warmest, because the victorious spirit of “new life” is upon the land, and with it, comes its avatars, the bees.

Therefore, honey’s spiritual meaning is the “overcoming of death”, the thing from which death flees, the light from which darkness cowers.

In the Buddhist story of Buddha’s journey to enlightenment, the sages tell of his purification of death by the symbol of funeral wrappings which, when washed, become a monk’s garments. After this, they tell of the Transcendent Ones (Heavenly Buddhas) who had awoken him from his deep sleep, and was then offered the allegorical “milk and honey” which restored his “golden complexion”, a metaphor for consciousness. “While he traveled out of his wisdom body to a celestial palace in heaven, amid an assembly of Transcendent Ones, […] the Bodhisattva achieved perfect enlightenment.” (The Life of Buddha, Tenzin Chögyel)

Here it shows Buddha’s entrance into perfect enlightenment, earning him the title “Buddha”, symbolized by the food of “milk and honey”.

In the Qu’ran also honey is revered as a gift of life for the spiritually conscious, “There are rivers of honey in the Paradise promised to the god-fearing” (Sura xlvii. 17, 18)– (of course, this is metaphorical, not literal).

Honey is used in every spiritual and traditional practice, in both ritual and allegory. It is used for a variety of things and always for benevolent purposes. As a spiritualist I use honey even on my spiritual altar and the results there are great. I use them in candle burning rituals, which I am a master of, (this is not ego but of experience and sacred knowledge of lights and alchemical practices that I have been engaged in over the years).

When chanting certain incantations I know where to place honey so my work will sail to the farthest regions of the Cosmos and I am certain of a response. Spiritual life is the life I live, so honey is one of my most treasured tools.

And now, for you, too, it is good for you to know some of the useful things for which honey can be used to help your life when you need it. I will share a few with you.

(Note: make sure to use pure honey!)

1- For Safe Pregnancy and Birth

Using honey when a woman is pregnant will assist in her having an easier birth, but more importantly, the use of honey sends messages to the unborn fetus. Here is one way to do this:

Use honey and rub on your stomach and pray that the child be born healthy and without any deformity mentally or physically. You may begin to do this at the beginning of the second trimester, and pray Psalms 6.

Here you are using something that works with the feminine energy to spiritually assist the fetus in your stomach that is growing, however something else is happening that you will not be aware of. As simple as this sounds it is powerful when done with deep intent.

Let the honey sit for 5-10 minutes while praying for the total health of your child and for you before washing it off.

This is spiritual. It will call forth all healing Angels to aid in the healing of the child coming in. Do this work and you will see miracle when the child is born, regardless of what doctors might have have warned you about.

A fixed brown candle will also be a good accompaniment to this work.

You will not see this anywhere, as it is given to me by Spirit to share with you.

Honey will also aid in those who have never conceived to conceive… though I am not yet permitted to disclose how this is done.

2- For Work Environments

If you are now on a job you are having difficulties, honey can be used to rectify the situation. By just placing a jar of honey, either in your drawer or on your desk, with prayer to help rectify trouble or tension.

As simple as it sounds, it works.

Or you can get normal water in a plastic bottle, add a dollop of honey, and pray over it concerning your situation. You are praying for peace and goodness or pleasant experiences, and your desire for whatever troubling situations to go away without problems. Then take the bottle and throw it away into a body of running water, such as a stream or river, and walk away with your head held straight.

3- For Financial Struggles

If a person struggles financially, honey can aid in prosperity. Go to the market and buy a lot of fruits. Ensure these fruits are in good condition and without blemish. Then get something called sesame seed, handful of dry beans, handful of corn, and a handful of rice.

Then get any amount of money, any liquor you choose, and a handful of sweets (candy). Then (if you are in Africa) get Scent Leaf, other places use basil, get raw honey, and package all of these items (with the exception of the sweets, liquor and honey) beautifully into a basket, with the money wrapped neatly into something and hidden within the basket.

Go outside and find a nice big tree with solid trunk and roots. Feel your intuition… which of these trees call to you? As you approach the chosen tree, pour the liquor (if you have chosen beer, shake it up and spray the roots of the tree), then throw your handful of sweets to the tree. If there are any accompanying trees to the right or left of your chosen tree, share some of your sweets and liquor with them also.

Now take your basket offering, let it touch the ground once, then lift it. Let it touch the ground twice, then lift it. On the third touching, lift it and touch it to your forehead. Now place it on the ground permanently.

Now take your honey, taste a little of its sweetness, and gingerly drizzle it atop of your basket offering with intent prayer.

Remember, save some of your honey for the companion trees to the left and right of your chosen tree, if there are companion trees. Then leave the jar of honey turned face down into your basket.

Now return home and do not look back. Know that you have done a fine offering to the Earth and its offsprings. You should receive an answer afterwards.

Remember, I told you that things that come from the Spiritual world to this world comes corrupted. So if you have prayed for a million dollars, you may receive a better position with a better pay than before. Or perhaps you receive a check from the IRS. Something may happen, but when it does, you must acknowledge it.

I must also tell you that this ritual is only able to be done once a year or once every two years. There are laws in the Universe that must be adhered to. Your genuine need should not turn into greed or power.

4- (Honorable Mention) Honey and Mental Health

Other than its scientific uses, spiritually, honey is also excellent for the preservation and reverse of mental health (if it has already began declining), such as alzheimers. If a person has this disease, they should eat the raw honey (from the cone) with the tuna plant alternately, and it will assist in brining the brain back to life.

The tuna plant should be properly washed and blended with the skin, with a dollop of pure honey, pumpkin seed, and holy basil, and as soon as the person begins to show signs of a debilitating brain activity, or of memory loss, blend this mixture, and with strong prayers, drink this 3 times a week to improve brain and cognitive functions.

There is a lot more to say on honey, but can not all be written here. Hopefully one day I shall do a workshop on it for all those interested.

As usual I love you all, i really do.

Your friend Obara (sweet like honey) Meji

“Focus on the roses: ‘A person who gathers honey will not escape being stung by bees. A person who gathers roses will not escape being scratched by thorns’. The positive things in life also have negative aspects. Keep your focus on the beautiful roses of the world and the thorns will seem trivial and inconsequential.

Thank you for this blog madam Obara. I always love reading your blogs as they have helped me immensely in embracing my spirituality. I want to ask, the jar of honey that is to be left turned face down in the basket of offering, should the jar be open or closed? I anticipate your kind response.

This is amazing. Honey symbolizes sweetness. I have fed honey to mother earth as an offering when I want to pray. My late dad thought me how to pray with nature. I try as much as possible to offer something to the earth or waters when I want to pray. Thank you ma for showing us that we are not crazy but gifted.

Thanks for always sharing with us. It’s such a blessing mam. But after pouring the drink and sweets at the tree root, what are we to do with the basket [a handful of rice and corn with money wrapped in it] before heading home, are we to leave it there?

Greetings, do I leave the basket there forever? If not, when should it be removed? And do I dispose of it in the trash if I’m allowed to remove it?

Personally I have honey on my altar because you instructed to do so along time ago in a conversation.
I have bad allergies/sinus issues and the ONLY thing that helps me is a spoon of honey in the morning as I wake- I have been using this for like 7 yrs and have told others who have allergies and they thank me for it-

I remember when I was very young, a prophet told me to always keep honey in my house that the angles who move with me like it. Recently I keep them in front of my alter and 2 days ago I woke up and my mind told me “take some honey”. I never knew honey can be used for prayers in that sort. I’m always fixated on water. Thanks for this!

Hey Obara! I absolutely loved this post! Who knew honey had such amazing spiritual benefits? Thank you for shining a light on that. I was totally blown away by how positive its uses are! So, there I was, reading about the financial struggles section at around 3 AM on my tablet, and suddenly, I started picturing myself wandering through the park behind my house, trying to figure out which trees I could use in the “ritual.” Seriously, though, I really do have a park behind me—over 100 acres! I was visualizing all this early this morning and couldn’t help but… Read more »

Thank you Obara. Always a blessing reading from you. Now that we are talking about sweetness, there is a candle prayer to the Arcangels that I usually do that has sugar as one of the requirements. It is always a successful prayer but I’ve always asked myself what is the spiritual purpose for sugar.
