BOOK CLUB DICUSSION

download

This Thursday October 23rd 2014 in our book club discussion our Cami have provided the material which you will find the link below, it is a video, with an Introduction to the subject as well. She also will be the one to moderate on the topic placed forward. Cami stepped in and moderated for me last night and it was very good, well done Cami and thank you very much. It is unfortunate that I did not see my regulars to show support,  Ty who is always present was not feeling well, we love you Ty, but it is what it is, nuff love same way. Book Club begins @ 8pm, please make an effort to be here, knowledge is power, let us learn together.

This movie was chosen so that we can explore the social ills projected in the movie, along with a focus on victimization of those unable to help themselves.

Here is the are points of interest for tonight’s book club discussion:

1) What social ills are featured in this film?
2) Who are the real victims in the story?
3) Is there a theme of hope, perception and fear presented in the story line?
4) There’s a anthropological theme here as well…what is it?

If I had the energy to be an educator- I would use this film as a teaching material for sociology.

****Hope to see as many of my fellow bloggers tonight. Peepers if you ever wanted to discuss this movie feel free to drop in.

Ok we will pitch it to Obara and see what she thinks. Maybe 5-8 pics and phrases? or we could just list however many and touch on what we get through leaving the rest for the next week..

I have a ….exercise we could try for book club discussion: What if we set up half hour (or a set time frame) intervals where discuss a picture or sentence, Like: https://www.vtcoa.com/forums/f17/never-give-up-22173/ : What do you think of when you see this pic? What lesson if any is in it to you?
What you think?

Obara and Cami I know you both agree with Polygamy. .. but why?

Cami
Reply to  Yazzy

Yu memory good! lol

Polygamy has benefits. For instance, a man marry is first wife and she cannot conceive…why should the man who is fertile live life without an offspring to suit the woman who can’t conceive? Why should the woman be deprived of a married life because of her inability to conceive…bring in the next woman and if she can conceive welcome to the household, if not then out she go (lol).

On top of the fact that the practice out date any law or argument against it, coming from the African forefathers. It represents unity/community building.

What is wealth? If we think of needs and wants, then wealth, to me, is anything over needs (in a material sense). Wealth – an abundance or profusion of anything; plentiful amount – There is a distinction between material wealth and spiritual wealth, however, one affects the other as we see in relation to wealth and moral decay. This can go much further if we want it to…

“If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself” – Desiderata
When we focus on the labels of society we are subjugating ourselves to prescribed behavior patterns. In my opinion, junior’s mental lapse came from his “manhood” being challenged. Nuff people love “floss” but confidence and arrogance are too different things. Knowing that there are greater and lesser than we in this wide world should keep us humble; accepting that may keep us sane…

Hope: Marcia hoped that her daughters would have a better life, amount to more and not struggle as much…

Perception: the reality we live is what we believe…u have to dig deep to change it…

Marcia perceived that her initial way out of poverty was thru a bad man or big man…both using her and her kids…

Alavine is really a quiet person but have to put on a persona to give a perception of being a dancehall queen to survive…

Ty, I thought she was going to flip when Tanya had the dude sitting in the house. I liked how she invite him to stay for fish dinner and how she rap with Tanya while cleaning the fish.

Me too Cami…it shows that deep down she wanted the best for daughter…she just never had the tools…in that same dialogue Marcia talked about her long ago dreams that we’re never realized…it was the most telling seen for me…

As Obara says, there are many roads to one market…the route or choice we make is our own… Poverty will mek u do things you never thought of before… I cannot imagine selling me children’s body… The price would be to much and the damage could not be undone…

Luckily Marcia was able to find another way…

No offense, but when she told Tanya about her dancing life before having her and not finishing school isn’t far off. And I know for a fact that a lot of Country young girls run leave country when dem “catch” belly.

The world full of Marcias’, but as a Jamaican I’m more exposed to this type of Marcia. I didn’t answer the last question…the answer is that in anthropology studies Jamaica is classified as a matriarchal society.

No Nunu, Marcia was the head of household. She even dress the part and behave in such a masculine manner during the domino game. She even abandon the emotional role and fled when the police came to the scene of the stabbing.

It look like Marcia have a back story similar to Obara’s pregnancy story. I noticed the ease of communication between her and her parents when she took Junior to the country.

It was funny when the father say if him want to kill him self alright but why him a mash up me chair…dwln

Obara si courage come up deh, you had courage in the face of adversity without having to put your morality aside in order to survive. Some people too afraid to face that suh it easier to sell fi a few dollas

Cami

NuNu, you keep on saying morality…what is morality? Osun protect prostitutes so it can’t be that “immoral”, it made women independent fi centuries long before women could gain any form of employment.
