This Thursday October 23rd 2014 in our book club discussion our Cami have provided the material which you will find the link below, it is a video, with an Introduction to the subject as well. She also will be the one to moderate on the topic placed forward. Cami stepped in and moderated for me last night and it was very good, well done Cami and thank you very much. It is unfortunate that I did not see my regulars to show support,  Ty who is always present was not feeling well, we love you Ty, but it is what it is, nuff love same way. Book Club begins @ 8pm, please make an effort to be here, knowledge is power, let us learn together.

This movie was chosen so that we can explore the social ills projected in the movie, along with a focus on victimization of those unable to help themselves.

Here is the are points of interest for tonight’s book club discussion:

1) What social ills are featured in this film?
2) Who are the real victims in the story?
3) Is there a theme of hope, perception and fear presented in the story line?
4) There’s a anthropological theme here as well…what is it?

If I had the energy to be an educator- I would use this film as a teaching material for sociology.

****Hope to see as many of my fellow bloggers tonight. Peepers if you ever wanted to discuss this movie feel free to drop in.

Ok we will pitch it to Obara and see what she thinks. Maybe 5-8 pics and phrases? or we could just list however many and touch on what we get through leaving the rest for the next week..

The thought behind this is to agitate our mind to the point where a picture or a phrase can lead us to many different thoughts….

I have a ….exercise we could try for book club discussion: What if we set up half hour (or a set time frame) intervals where discuss a picture or sentence, Like: http://www.vtcoa.com/forums/f17/never-give-up-22173/ : What do you think of when you see this pic? What lesson if any is in it to you?
What you think?

Yazzy, see a post two videos fi you. And of course you haven’t seen a healthy polygamous union…because they aren’t out there for us to see.

The same can be said about monogamous marriages…many healthy and probably more unhealthy one than healthy.

Yazzy

Cami the theory sounds good but mi have yet fi see an actual stable and healthy polygamist marriage…

Why take in a women into the fam to be we’d and wife just fi her womb contribution when yuh can pay a surrogate fi hab yuh pickney and gi yuh and kip har dutty rassssssswssssseeeee outta di pichu??

Cami

Yu memory good! lol

Polygamy has benefits. For instance, a man marry is first wife and she cannot conceive…why should the man who is fertile live life without an offspring to suit the woman who can’t conceive? Why should the woman be deprived of a married life because of her inability to conceive…bring in the next woman and if she can conceive welcome to the household, if not then out she go (lol).

On top of the fact that the practice out date any law or argument against it, coming from the African forefathers. It represents unity/community building.

Marriage once upon a time wasn’t for peasants, lolol. Marriage was for the RICH. Rich man have legacy to pass on so the daughters (see Yw reference, lol) were set up to marry men of means so that both house would combine their fortunes…we see their last names today day.

Remember women weren’t allow to gain (exceptions rare) so marriages were forced or some sly fox worked his way in to inherit because the “weak” woman needed a guardian when papa gone.

I need to research (can’t recall right now) when peasants , lol got marriage permission…I think is when jesus become a household name.

Cami, my mom was a Marcia type (in regards to the exploitation part). I remember I dated a wealthy guy when I was a teenager and introduced him to my mom and he was Atleast 45… I feel pathetic thinking about it now but when you’re a teenager you really don’t give a eff.. do ya?

Ish got real when I decided I would break it off with him… mom says “yuh tan deh nuh do weh yuh affi do fi ole him.. if yuh cuzin dem cudda get dem han pan him, dem whine him weh from yuh long time”

He was the Santa Claus.. and he easily used his wealth to dazzle my mom’s attention and conviction … when mi lef him she show mi a side a har I neva see before… I’m just keeping it real.

If grandeur comes I would distribute it to those lesser than I…after me make myself comfortable and again, my comfort is simple.

Me babes say all he need in life is a good house, money in the bank and a good vehicle, lol. And that’s me with the exception that I like a little low key luxury, now and then.

If I buy babes something I have to get it on sale or not let him know that I payed a good penny for it (take off the tag) and him give away things till I have to tell him to slow down. All socks him gi whey.

Cami I always admire your honesty and openness. Truth be told we allll yearn for a good come up and with that we Plat and scheme but we use different words to mask/describe the intent but nonetheless the intent is the same… just better dressed up to those who are more self righteous…

If grandeur comes, I’ll take it but I, just like you, prefer a more realistic come up 😀

Thanks for sharing that Yazzy. My mum (many mums) hinted but never went there like your mum. Sometimes I think the thoughts run through her mind of what I let go…but I’m the don’t care type as well.

I’ve been Marcia the schemer many times…even at this moment I’m scheming on what to do to come up…don’t we all? lol

Only thing is…my come up isn’t one of grandeur- just plain comfort.

Ty

A quick question for the board,…what is wealth!

Beyond food, clothes, shelter, basic needs and entertainment,..what do we need?

I was thinking of the baba on the video last night and when he said babalawos live long because they do not go after material wealth…

Yw
Blogger
Blogger

What is wealth? If we think of needs and wants, then wealth, to me, is anything over needs (in a material sense). Wealth – an abundance or profusion of anything; plentiful amount – There is a distinction between material wealth and spiritual wealth, however, one affects the other as we see in relation to wealth and moral decay. This can go much further if we want it to…

Fear: both priest and Larry used fear to manipulate the actions of others…

Marcia feared for a continued future of poverty with no way out…it was this fear that made her decide to take action and find a way out…she fumbled but then found a way…

Cami

The fear that Priest wield has Junior traumatize till him became mentally displace.

Yw
Blogger
Blogger

“If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself” – Desiderata
When we focus on the labels of society we are subjugating ourselves to prescribed behavior patterns. In my opinion, junior’s mental lapse came from his “manhood” being challenged. Nuff people love “floss” but confidence and arrogance are too different things. Knowing that there are greater and lesser than we in this wide world should keep us humble; accepting that may keep us sane…

Ty
Blogger
Blogger

As to the themes:

Hope: Marcia hoped that her daughters would have a better life, amount to more and not struggle as much…

Perception: the reality we live is what we believe…u have to dig deep to change it…

Marcia perceived that her initial way out of poverty was thru a bad man or big man…both using her and her kids…

Alavine is really a quiet person but have to put on a persona to give a perception of being a dancehall queen to survive…

The world full of Marcias’, but as a Jamaican I’m more exposed to this type of Marcia. I didn’t answer the last question…the answer is that in anthropology studies Jamaica is classified as a matriarchal society.

No Nunu, Marcia was the head of household. She even dress the part and behave in such a masculine manner during the domino game. She even abandon the emotional role and fled when the police came to the scene of the stabbing.

Didn’t it seem.patriarchal because of the movie?

The movie shows the choices some people have to make because of poverty Marcia work hard not one but two job and still couldn’t make ends meet much less provide education for the girls and after dutty terrorizing Priest and “uncle” tek set Larry my gorl duh wha shi haffi duh as Kia seh. Poverty force yuh fi mek di hard decisions

Tanya is attending an expensive school. Marcia could downscale on that expense and Tanya wouldn’t mind because Larry wouldn’t be in her young life, pawing at salivating after her.

Remember…I don’t do morals because “what’s wrong in one nation is right in another”. But maternal instincts must always be present…mother should whore out her self to feed her young, not the young being whore out to feed self and mother.

It shouldnt but marcia at the time cudden see any other way. Im hlad how tanya speak up bout it n start act out. It make marcia look into herself n the situation she was putting the girl chile. What bout the madda weh gi whey dem boy chile to di man dem O ma se oooo

No Cami it shouldn’t but it does. People do all kinds if things in order to survive. Survival trumps morality sometimes

Kia, see Obara (@20:30:15) start the explanation. This movie touches on economics, upward mobility (look at Alavine’s night life and her day life), sex, family life, entertainment culture, education, teenage life…

Sunny was a victim of Larry. It was after watching the movie over and over that I saw that Priest wasn’t at the location to sell drinks but to instigate trouble.

Hey Kia the connection of what the old man said in the beginning with the squatters dispute was presented to us in a disconnected way because I’m still curious as to the exact role that Sunny played…did he directly warn the squatters of Larry’s intentions.

Don’t you also think she self-victimize in order to survive. She had to use her sexuality in order to provide for her family

Cami

I’m an old dancehaller and it did sweet…remember Marcia said she use to dance to the music Tanya caught her listening to before she had her…Marcia not being self-victimize, she using what was once a time of leisure and created her dance hall persona. It was more of an hidden skill set.

Cami

That’s why Marcia should be putting herself out to Larry and not groom her daughter to be Larry’s pet.

Cami

She was too rugged…cause look how him want her when he met her alternate persona at the dress maker. I guess in regular dress the sexual deviance of Larry isn’t met.

Yw

She did try dat but I’m never want her, ‘I’m did want di daughter.

Si how people use “help” as a way to get what them want. Careful out there all. When you are in distress that is when you have to look for wolves….

Larry is offered Tanya by Marcia.

Yw

This is a tricky one to me. Marcia knew what she was doing but circumstance of life is a hell of a ting. Rich marry rich to keep wealth within a certain group. Not sure which worse.

“she’s not thinking about the pspsychological effect it might have on Tanya. ”

True quote NuNu. People like Marcia (education stop at grade 5 the most) have no understanding, nor do their minds go towards psychology. Hence, in this case a person like Marcia isn’t thinking of long term or short term effects on the victim (s) they create.

NuNu
Blogger
Blogger

Yes but she did regret it, still didn’t make it right, just for argument sake, she’s not thinking about the pspsychological effect it might have on Tanya. She’s thinking “uncle” Larry can pay for the education you need, and education is necessary because it can get you away from poverty. What does that tell you about the psyche of somebody who live around such bleak surroundings, they weigh the odds

Yes, a victim of circumstance. But, Tanya is a victim of what Marcia created and Junior a victim of life circumstance factored in by Larry’s actions.

Here is the are points of interest for tonight’s book club discussion:

1) What social ills are featured in this film?

This film featured the primary social ill of poverty, violence coupled with instilling fear through intimidation, classism, childhood prostitution (subtle presentation), mental health.

2) Who are the real victims in the story?

For me the victims were: Junior (the brother), Tanya (older daughter)

3) Is there a theme of hope, perception and fear presented in the story line?

Hope comes from Marcia winning the competition, Tanya not having to deal with “uncle Larry”.
Perception comes from those who’ll see Larry and Marcia as doing any good.
Fear is present in Marcia’s view about her life, Junior hiding from Priest and Tanya being sexually molested/assaulted by Larry

4) There’s a anthropological theme here as well…what is it? I’ll leave this for last, lol

Well we.see certain stereotypes present, she’s a poor, black, single mother without a formal education. she’s on the lower socio-economic rung. No fathers present to help her

Cami

NuNu…being that Jamaica is a black nation (90%) do you really thing black is a valid part of Marcia’s problem in current times? I personally thing that list of stereotypes are more valid outside of the Island/Caribbean on a whole.
