This Thursday October 23rd 2014 in our book club discussion our Cami have provided the material which you will find the link below, it is a video, with an Introduction to the subject as well. She also will be the one to moderate on the topic placed forward. Cami stepped in and moderated for me last night and it was very good, well done Cami and thank you very much. It is unfortunate that I did not see my regulars to show support,  Ty who is always present was not feeling well, we love you Ty, but it is what it is, nuff love same way. Book Club begins @ 8pm, please make an effort to be here, knowledge is power, let us learn together.

This movie was chosen so that we can explore the social ills projected in the movie, along with a focus on victimization of those unable to help themselves.

Here is the are points of interest for tonight’s book club discussion:

1) What social ills are featured in this film?
2) Who are the real victims in the story?
3) Is there a theme of hope, perception and fear presented in the story line?
4) There’s a anthropological theme here as well…what is it?

If I had the energy to be an educator- I would use this film as a teaching material for sociology.

****Hope to see as many of my fellow bloggers tonight. Peepers if you ever wanted to discuss this movie feel free to drop in.

Ok we will pitch it to Obara and see what she thinks. Maybe 5-8 pics and phrases? or we could just list however many and touch on what we get through leaving the rest for the next week..

The thought behind this is to agitate our mind to the point where a picture or a phrase can lead us to many different thoughts….

I have a ….exercise we could try for book club discussion: What if we set up half hour (or a set time frame) intervals where discuss a picture or sentence, Like: http://www.vtcoa.com/forums/f17/never-give-up-22173/ : What do you think of when you see this pic? What lesson if any is in it to you?
What you think?

I didn’t get to watch the entire vid Professora Cami **shamefully** but I distinctively memba di mom a try pimp out her daughter to di ole gray tun nasty “santa claus” and that is strictly a product of muma greed! How got the damn nerve… but perhaps it was a lesson she had to learn for she later took matters into her own hands. Sometimes kids can teach parents to be better parents.

Most people want to live a comfortable life and that usually means being financially stable ,suh yes

For me true wealth is to have a stable roof over ones head, constant source for food, clothing, hygiene, peace of mind, free will (freedom of movement included) and HEALTH.

Ty

The prize was going to lift them out of poverty and for them it was perceived as wealth…can you say that this prize would be your wealth…

Also it had me thinking bout what prize would I need?

NuNu

Knowledge, wisdom, understanding, have that and know how and when to use the information. yuh good to go!

Ty
Blogger

A quick question for the board,…what is wealth!

Beyond food, clothes, shelter, basic needs and entertainment,..what do we need?

I was thinking of the baba on the video last night and when he said babalawos live long because they do not go after material wealth…

REPOST:

Yw: Larry is more like religion than God…He offers hope but want payment of flesh.

Larry is a flesh buyer and peddler. He wants the flesh of the innocent females, and the death of a Samaritan and that of the helpless.

Ty

Theme: metamorphosis ….Marcia to dancehall queen, junior to mad man, priest to lover from bad man

Ty

Sorry but will have to ketch up tomorrow. Sorry, sorry….Night all!!!

Ty
Blogger

Fear: both priest and Larry used fear to manipulate the actions of others…

Marcia feared for a continued future of poverty with no way out…it was this fear that made her decide to take action and find a way out…she fumbled but then found a way…

Ty
Blogger

As to the themes:

Hope: Marcia hoped that her daughters would have a better life, amount to more and not struggle as much…

Perception: the reality we live is what we believe…u have to dig deep to change it…

Marcia perceived that her initial way out of poverty was thru a bad man or big man…both using her and her kids…

Alavine is really a quiet person but have to put on a persona to give a perception of being a dancehall queen to survive…

Ty
Blogger

Me nah like, me did fraid a priest….lol

Ty

Marcia wanted to break the cycle of poverty for her daughter…every mothers hope…it took time and different techniques to find a way….

I can cite countless academic journal articles…Marcia is a figure of strength and just one story of countless Jamaican women.

Ty

As Obara says, there are many roads to one market…the route or choice we make is our own… Poverty will mek u do things you never thought of before… I cannot imagine selling me children’s body… The price would be to much and the damage could not be undone…

Luckily Marcia was able to find another way…

NuNu

Her street smarts, perseverance and love for family made her find a way and gave her a chance to change her life so kudos to her

Here is the are points of interest for tonight’s book club discussion: 1) What social ills are featured in this film? This film featured the primary social ill of poverty, violence coupled with instilling fear through intimidation, classism, childhood prostitution (subtle presentation), mental health. 2) Who are the real victims in the story? For me the victims were: Junior (the brother), Tanya (older daughter) 3) Is there a theme of hope, perception and fear presented in the story line? Hope comes from Marcia winning the competition, Tanya not having to deal with “uncle Larry”. Perception comes from those who’ll see… Read more »
