A FATHER’S LOVE – A TALE OF TRUST, LOVE AND OBEAH – PART 3

I hope that you have been enjoying this new series on Obeah. I write stories like these to show you all different ways of how human beings behave whether through jealousy, delusions of grandeur, hatred, power hunger, and more and also to show the power of love, and that it conquers all even when not of this world.

Wicked and evil behavior is sparked by ego, desire or glamour these give way to emotions which leads persons to commit acts of wickedness against their fellow human beings. Many humans suffer from things they conjure within their minds and believe, filling them with hate and envy, and some self righteous attitude as if the world and its inhabitants owes them something, when will they learn?.

Mackie felt an eerie feeling in the back of her neck. She knew when spirits that did not belong to her were around, and so she did not turn around to face them, she asked her question with her back turned. “Is who yuh, what yuh want?

Aunty who was Smithy’s mother spoke first, the message came from not a voice one could here but a telepathic message which Mackie alone heard.

“Gertrude Silvera Mckenzie daughter of Gwendolin Virginia Langley, you have walked into the wrong path on the road, look before you and you will see three spiders, be careful you do not step into their web, no knife or scissors or any instruments have ever been made since the beginning of time that can remove anyone caught in that trap, Mackie think twice”, warned Aunty, who stood directly behind Mackie who felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end while she shivered.

Before Mackie could respond, Miss Miss (aunty’s daughter and Smithy’s sister while she lived on earth) began to speak, “Madda Mack, Madda Mack, Madda Mack, three times mi call yuh name not twice, it is the call of an initiate and not of the Christ, on this ground which you stand today, it is the same ground tomorrow your body will lay”. Madda Mackie, knew that this was a death threat, but was powerless to move.

Son Son (Smithy’s brother while he lived on earth) said his own also, his was a tale which had many meaasges. Here I look on today I see a fool, some one who is lost, and working without tools. Madda Mack you have lost your way, but for all you have done in life, you will have to pay, pay attention to these difficult words in which I say. Three little pigs one day went out, one left his eye home, the other his leg the third his snout. As they traveled along their humble way, they saw a sheep who had gone astray. The one without eye offered to lead him home, the other without leg offered his back on which to carry him, and the one without a snout offered to find food for him to eat. The sheep was very thankful, and thought to himself as he looked at these three handicapped pigs and all they offered, and told himself that from this day, humble and docile he would be, never again would he stray. He who had always given trouble he never cared for anyone, but from today he would be calm, gentle and quiet, he would change.Look at these ones who were humble as could be, but willing to help him who was perfectly fine, only lost. Mackie find back your road, or lose yourself.

Mackie’s heart raced as she had never before had messages like these given to her by spirits. She was tempted to turn around, but could not. So she decided to keep cool, and ask some questions.

“Is why oonu come here, I doe owe yuh nutten, is who oonuh and why the warning?

Aunty, Miss Miss and Son Son, touched her in the back of the neck, and she jerked and went immediately into spirit, and began jumping as Zion people do. She called out loudly for her assistant who ran in to see what was happening to Madda Mackie. Mackie called out for white rum, she was jumping on one leg by now with her eyes were closed as she called out for the angel Gabriel. Rider and Twiggy stood at the door outside and watched as Mackie rubbed herself with the rum while shouting, “help me Lord, Master!! They could not enter the house as Aunty, Miss Miss and Son Son along with others were already inside. They had no light and so all they could do was cast their shadow in. This is when Madda Mackie shouted out for the angel Gabriel upon sensing them outside. As she was caught up in spirit, this stemming from the touch of Aunty and her children which vibrated through the whole body of Madda Mackie, which sent her off into another world it seems. Her own spirits who knew better than to interfere with the beating, of which Madda Mackie was receiving in this moment stood one side and watched, they even laughed. It wasn’t until Aunty and her children had left that Mackie was able to calm down from catching spirit which left her legs swollen, she was exhausted.

Miss Jane had all heard all the commotion while sitting outside, had gone around to the back to see what was happening as everybody was running to Mackie and some were inside chanting and jumping with her, they had no idea that she was being chastised by spirits who were loved ones of people who she wanted to kill. Miss Jane was impressed by Mackie being in the spirit and thought to her self, thank God mi find dissa yah ooman yah and have har fi mi fren from long time, Mackie know har work, look how God ah use har!

If only Miss Jane knew the discomfort that Mackie was in and how she feared for her life within that moment when she was in spirit, thinking that she may not come out of it alive.

Smithy wanted to have a talk with his son. Ever since he saw his mother he felt as of something was brewing, what it was he could not tell, but he would take no chances, he would go to see Mr. Tulloch. He had seen Mr. Tulloch once, a very longtime ago when he had gotten a ticket to go for farm work in the States. A few of the fellows from the mill had told him to go and get himself checked to see if he would get through. Smithy did not really believe in “those things”, but was urged to go and so he did. The morning he went there, the place was full, he sat down in the yard waiting to be seen. Mr Tulloch had come out to call in the next person for reading, and he scanned the yard which had at least a hundred people in it. His eye rested on Smithy’s face and he said, “You young man stand up”.

Smithy pointed to himself as he looked around to make sure that it was indeed him Mr.Tulloch was speaking to. Mr. Tulloch said impatiently “yes you young man stand up”.

Smithy stood up, Mr. Tulloch said, “you get a ticket to go in for farm work, you not going to get through son, it is not your time to travel, you will not get the visa, you can go son, as I know that is the only reason you came.

Smithy left. He did not get through as the man had said, he had never been to another reader, but he had never forgotten that man. Smithy hoped he was still alive. He had looked just a few years older that Smithy, so Smithy hoped to find him, he would bring Everton, because his mind told him that they both needed to go.

When Smithy approached Everton with the idea, and told him the story of the ticket for farm work long ago, Everton who respected and loved his dad and who had never entertained the thought to have a reading done, agreed to go along. He trusted his father, after all the man had just saved his life. They planned to go the next day and went to see Mr. Tulloch who was still alive and working, he was in his 80’s, 83 to be exact.

They had left the baby with the neighbor the morning they were to travel to Clarendon where Smithy had last seen Mr Tulloch, Smithy had to ask for help in directing him and Everton to the man’s home. The compound of Mr. Tulloch was not as full as Smithy expected it to be, they had gotten there very early. Mr Tulloch was a very tall black man, he had been doing his work since he was fourteen years old. He was touched on his head in a dream when he was twelve years old by a very tall black strikingly serious looking African man who told him that he was his father from Togo. The man had told him that from this day his life would change and he must not fear what would happen to him when he woke up, all would be well. When Mr Tulloch awoke that morning he was blind. His parents were sick with worry, but a calm Ben as he was called then, Benjamin was his first name, told them not to fear, his sight would return with one year. Everyone was puzzled by this little boy and how he handled what happened to him. He began to prophesy and do remarkable things which showed signs that he was no ordinary child. The African he called Togo, took him all over the world at nights in astral travels and taught him very well,he became a high initiate who wold shock people with his accurate revelations, he had never stepped foot inside a church since the day he got his sight back. This helped to keep him clean. A day before Mr. Tulloch was to receive his sight back, Togo told him in a dream to tell his mother to close the windows and place a black cloth over his eyes, the place should be in total darkness. He told his mother and father, they did as he asked them. They had come to trust him, as they realized that the boy was a prophet. When he woke up the morning, he knew that his sight had returned, but he had to be gradually exposed to lights as he did not want to damage his eyes. When he could fully function, he began his work, and he was known as one of Jamaica’s greatest Obeah man, and although the word Obeah was synonymous with evil doings, he did not do any evil work, nor did he have any wicked bones in his body. He healed and made well everyone he touched. He was a stern but truthful man who abided by the laws of not only God and man but of the Universe. His family loved him very much and so did Togo, his head guide, and everyone he came in contact with. He was humble, that was all he claimed.

Smithy and Everton were told to go into Mr. Tulloch’s office where they saw him sitting on the floor where they too were expected to sit.

They greeted him, and Smithy attempted to remind him of who he was, Mr Tulloch only smiled and said, “Son, that was so long ago and mi si suh much people, de old brain cyaan memba dat. All three men laughed, and Mr Tulloch began to speak.

“You young man”, he said as he looked at Everton, De woman nearly tie you in de callaloo, but yuh get whey, but now dem coming after yuh fadda, but instead it gwine lick de calf, where is your son, the little brown baby name Dexter?

Everton was shocked, how did this man know his sons name? Did his father tell him? Of course not, they had to ask and search to find Mr, Tulloch’s place so that was not possible.

“He is with the baby sitter sah” answered Everton who was sitting erect, his heart beating fast, but he tried to remain calm

“Yuh have a phone? asked Mr, Tulloch who had now gotten up and was using a chalk to draw some seals on the walls. By doing this unbeknownst to Smithy and Everton, he was sending out an alert to the spirit realm for his guides to go and surround the baby because he would die at the hands of evil.

“Yes sah”, answered Everton

“Call de baby sitter right now”, Mr Tulloch commanded.

The girl answered on the second ring, her name was Mitzi and she was twenty five years old and the daughter of their neighbor Miss Brown.

Mr. Tulloch asked Everton to ask the girl where was the baby, to which she responded that he was asleep. Mr. Tulloch then told Everton to tell the girl that she should do correctly what she was about to be told. She promised to do so, but tried to inquire what was happening. Smithy took the phone and asked to speak to Miss Brown the mother and a very nice lady, when Miss Brown came on the phone Smithy told her to please tell her daughter do as they were instructed. The girl was the one chosen to do the work as she was still of child bearing age and Miss Brown was not, but Miss Brown who was no fool figured that this was something important and so she asked no question, but begged her daughter to comply.

Mr.Tulloch instructed the girl through Smithy, to take the baby and place him in her lap under her dress making sure that she had on a long dress and cover him. The dress was not be too tight so as not to suffocate him. He then told her to stay like that with him for one hour, she must not remove him from there even if he protested, she promised.

After they hung up, Mr. Tulloch told Smithy and his son that an order was out for Smithy coming from Miss Jane to kill him, but because he had such good ancestral support, it would by pass him and catch the child as he shared the same blood with the sender. He told the father and son duo that the spirits had gone to the house for the child, because they were warned by Smithy’s head that they could not come for him, but the child’s head was not fully developed and so they wanted it instead, however an appeal was sent out by the great grandmother because the baby was also her blood, the appeal was made to the court of judgement in the realm of time and space and so it was now a race to save the child’s life . He explained that they would smell him next door and go for him as the broom weed was already on the ground where they lived and it was the pointer to the child.

As soon as they knew the child was next door which they already did, they were going for him. Mr. Tulloch began to speak in another language, he kept on saying, “Go now”, as he commanded his own band of spirits to go and defend the child. He told them in between tongues that because the child was under Mitzi’s dress who was a woman of child bearing age, and under the dress which mimicked being in the womb, woman had power he said as he explained, but they do not know it however the child would feel the effects of the death grip but he would not die, as long as Mitzi did as she was told. Everton began to cry silently, he began to sweat with worry for his poor innocent infant.

Smithy thanked God that he had followed his mind and come today, he knew this man spoke the truth and so he was calm as he patted his sons back.

Mitzi was worried as she sat with a sleeping Dexter under her dress. She wondered what this was all about and she begged her mother to sit with her until the hour passed. The house felt extremely hot, a lizard croaked loudly somewhere which made Mitzi and Miss Brown jump. A preying Mantis flew into the room and landed on the wall. It was huge as it sat there. Dexter moved a bit,and sighed heavily while still sleeping. The house seemed to get hotter, and Miss Brown suddenly felt faint.’Lawd Mitzi, mi head ah swell, mi nuh feel good” she said and began to repeat the Lord’s prayer, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want……

Rider, Twiggy and their family looked beneath Mitzi’s dress and saw the child, but there was a yellow hue which radiated at them, they knew better than to grab the child as three guardian spirits surrounded them and a host of spirits like soldiers in the Queens army were milling about out on the defense, they would wait, just a little while to see if the girl would remove the child, but they knew that she was under instructions and that they would not be able to grab the child because of God’s army, nevertheless they would wait. If they did not get this young meat Mackie would pay and then Miss Jane. Rider grinned at Twiggy who was serious, she did not see the humor in none of it. Standing behind Mitzi was Aunty, Smithy’s mother, it was she who urged Smithy to remember the man Mr. Tulloch and take Everton there, as she knew that Rider and Twiggy would come today. She was the one who had sent Miss Miss and Son Son to guide them to Mr Tulloch who was a beam of light. She would protect her great grand, although he would feel the wind when he awoke, he would live, Rider and Twiggy and their crew would not take him.

Mr Tulloch, told the father and son to go home and bring the boy tomorrow before dawn break. He told them to catch the morning dew and bring the water with them. He warned them that the boy would have a high temperature and would appear sick, but they should not fear, they should just come. They hurried home. Everton felt as if his life had turned around since the first event with these wicked women, what had he done to deserve this. He had loved Millicent, why had it turned out this way.

When they got home, Dexter was still under Mitzi’s dress even though the hour had passed, he was fussy and wriggling to get out, but Miss Brown and Mitzi were afraid to remove him, with all the strange feelings which had attacked them and the stench which had taken over the house.

Makcie had taken the broom weed from Miss Jane when she recovered. She was worried, and had found the strength to go to her pot and perform the rites of the “gift” that they were supposed to get. She had complained to them about the spirits who gave her the parables today and who had sent her off into spirit which could have killed her, but they had scolded her on her fears, telling her that she had them so why was she fearful. She had no idea that they lied, and scoffed at her in her human stupid form. Fool said Twiggy to her husband, and they both gave a nasal laugh which Mackie heard. She asked them what was funny and they replied that she was a great worker but she was a coward. Mackie, left the room, she was worried, something was not right, her time to leave the world was near, she could feel it.

Miss Jane smiled in the back of the taxi as she drove home, as the taxi drove on, a black cat ran across the road and the cab ran over it, the cat  made a loud sound and jumped up in the air. He landed onto the bonnet of the car with a loud thud, blood splattering all over wind shield. He was dead. Miss Jane screamed as she saw it, but at the moment when she screamed she felt a cold hand grab her neck, she saw Millicent before her in a milli second of time she appeared as if she had died, Miss Jane fainted.

Wonderful read Ms. Obara! I can’t help but feel sorry for Madda Mackie, because maybe she would have thought twice if she knew the kind of covenant she had entered in. But then again, she chose to walk on the side of dark and vengeance because she wanted to know how to protect her family from evil.. but Lord have mercy— walking in the light would have given her the knowledge to protect her family. So now that she has set her soul group back what are they to do?

Thank you. For me it is always flies, crows or just black birds in general, black cats (there was a time I would see them everywhere or come home and find one waiting outside the entrance to my flat. Infact one Halloween night while talking to my boyfriend on the phone, as soon as he mentioned the words “black cat”, one suddenly appeared and crossed my path), bumblebees and spiders. Never any other animals or life forms. Just these ones. Not dogs, butterflies, any other kind of birds, bees, wasps etc. May I ask a question please? Mackie called on… Read more »

You said certain animals give omens. Can you expand on this? What does a cat at 1215am making noise mean? Also what is the omen for a ladybug? Also what is the omen for a white pigeon/pea dove?

Obara Meji, I have wish I could ask this as a question but I don’t think there is hard and fast rule type of answer. I have always wanted to know how to discern when an animal/bird/insect is a good or bad omen. Or a good spirit or bad spirit.
